Nestled in the heart of Bremerton, Washington, the quirky and vibrant Tik Tok’s Workshop played host to an enthralling spectacle of pinball wizardry on a rainy evening of February 5th, 2024. The Tik Tok’s Fair Strikes 2/5 pinball tournament, masterfully organized by Richard Godwin, brought together 14 passionate players from the pinball community for a night of flippers, tilts, and high scores that won’t soon be forgotten.
A Venue Like No Other
Stepping into Tik Tok’s Workshop, located at 1216 Sylvan Way, was like entering a realm where time stood still amidst the sound of pinballs ricocheting and the glow of neon lights. The venue, renowned for its incredible vibe and friendly atmosphere, was buzzing with excitement. Karaoke tunes provided a melodious backdrop to the symphony of pinball machines, adding a layer of impeccable charm to the event. It was more than a tournament; it was a celebration, especially significant as my sister and I marked her birthday amidst the electrifying energy of the pinball aficionados.
A Battle of Strategy and Skill
The tournament employed a Fair Strikes system in a Group Knockout format spanning 10 nail-biting rounds. Each player was on the edge, knowing that accumulating 7 strikes would signal the end of their journey. The format was unforgiving, yet it fostered a sense of camaraderie and respect among the competitors.
One of the tournament’s highlights was an intense showdown on the iconic “White Water” machine by Williams, a classic that dates back to January 1st, 1993. This particular game in Round 7 was a spectacle of skill and strategy. Nelson Liu, with an IFPA rank of 8108, emerged victorious, showcasing a masterful blend of precision and timing that left the audience in awe. He was closely followed by Chris Wilkes from Bainbridge Island, WA, Rachel Kahalekulu, and Astrid Morrison, all of whom displayed commendable prowess and determination.
Celebrating the Champions
The tournament’s climax was nothing short of cinematic, with Conrad Rustad from Bremerton, WA, clinching the top spot. With an impressive IFPA rank of 223 and a history of 231 IFPA events under his belt, Conrad’s experience and skill were undeniable. Daniel Trobare and Nelson Liu secured the second and third places, respectively, each showcasing their unique strategies and love for the game. Chris Wilkes, with his spirited gameplay, rounded out the top four, leaving a mark on the tournament with his dedication and sportsmanship.
A Tribute to the Machines
The tournament featured an eclectic collection of 18 pinball machines, each with its own story and legacy. Among them, “Whoa Nellie! Big Juicy Melons” by Stern, “Eight Ball” by Bally, “Cyclone” and “Demolition Man” by Williams, and “Monster Bash (Remake)” by Chicago Gaming stood out not just for their gameplay but as pieces of pinball history that continue to challenge and inspire players.
A Heartfelt Thanks
As the flippers rest and the lights dim, we extend our deepest gratitude to Richard Godwin for organizing such a memorable event and to Tik Tok’s Workshop for providing a perfect setting for pinball enthusiasts to converge, compete, and celebrate. The Tik Tok’s Fair Strikes tournament was more than a competition; it was a testament to the enduring spirit of the pinball community.
