A Pinball Tournament to Remember
The latest pinball showdown at Level 1 Arcade Bar – Stern Army – was a scorcher, not just because of the blazing 106°F temperature outside. Held on June 26, 2024, this event was the sixth week in a series, captivating seven players in a fast-paced, one-and-a-half-hour tournament. The Arcade Bar
Level 1 Arcade Bar in Mesa, located at 48 W MAIN ST, is a treasure trove for arcade enthusiasts. Boasting two stories of pure arcade bliss, it’s a haven filled with top-notch games, great food, and refreshing drinks. A must-visit spot, Level 1 Arcade Bar is an excellent blend of nostalgia and modern fun. Check out their website here. The Godzilla Showdown
Round 2 brought an electrifying match on Godzilla (Premium/LE) by Stern, released in September 2021. This pinball machine, inspired by the iconic monster, features a dynamic playfield with thrilling ramps, multi-ball chaos, and stunning visuals that make every game a blockbuster experience. John Magyar, displaying exceptional skill and precision, roared to victory, securing first place and solidifying his reputation as a top-tier player with an IFPA rank of 255. Hot on his heels was Bob Kennedy from Mesa, AZ, whose strategic gameplay earned him second place despite his rank of 1646. Colin Taylor, though unranked, showcased promising talent, finishing third. Justin Kolas, ranked 15938, brought spirited competition, rounding out the group. The match was a true testament to the excitement and intensity that Godzilla brings to the pinball arena.
Pinball Machine Highlights
With 12 pins to choose from, participants were spoiled for choice. Here are a few standouts:
- Whirlwind by Williams (1990): Designed by Pat Lawlor, this machine is a classic with its innovative spinning discs and vibrant theme. Players felt the rush of the storm as they played.
- The Addams Family by Bally (1992): A timeless favorite, this machine, designed by Pat Lawlor and Larry DeMar, captivated with its spooky charm and intricate playfield.
- Creature from the Black Lagoon by Bally (1992): John Trudeau’s design brought the 1950s drive-in movie experience to life, complete with fantastic multiball features.
- John Wick (Pro) by Stern (2024): One of the latest releases, this pin has quickly become a favorite with its action-packed theme and sleek design.
Celebrating the Champions
A huge round of applause for the tournament winners who showed exceptional skill and determination:
- Jason Barre: Hailing from Mesa, AZ, Jason clinched the top spot with his impressive Arizona Rank of 4th and a total of 450 IFPA events under his belt.
- John Magyar: Proving his mettle yet again, John secured second place with a Rank of 6th in Arizona, participating in 253 IFPA events.
- Bob Kennedy: With a solid performance, Bob took third place, holding an Arizona Rank of 45th and having competed in 121 events.
- Shawn Barnett: Shawn rounded out the top four, with a State Rank of 90th and 120 IFPA events to his name.
