The Stern Army Monthly Pinball Tournament at the I/O Arcade Bar on June 26, 2024, was a thrilling event for all 40 participants. The competition was fierce with six rounds, each featuring a single game. Only the top four advanced to the finals, where they faced off in two intense rounds with three games each. The tournament kicked off at 7:00 PM and wrapped up in a nail-biting 3 hours and 30 minutes.
Unveiling the I/O Arcade Bar
Located at 924 Williamson Street, Madison, WI 53703, the I/O Arcade Bar provided the perfect setting for this month’s tournament. This beloved venue, known for its eclectic music, classic movies, and an impressive selection of games, lived up to its reputation. As one enthusiastic reviewer put it, “Favorite place in Madison. Always the right song playing. Always the right movie on. All the games you could want to play. Great beer and vibes. The Addams Family Showdown
Round 2 witnessed a standout game on the iconic The Addams Family by Bally, released in January 1992. The game, inspired by the quirky and eerie Addams Family, was the perfect stage for a thrilling match. Kyle Stahl, with their sharp reflexes and strategic plays, outscored competitors Mark Liberto, Bryon Schmitz, and Keith Waz. The game’s haunted mansion theme set the scene as Kyle maneuvered through the electrifying ramps and loops, ultimately claiming victory.
Marvels of the Pinball Universe
This tournament featured a variety of pinball machines, each offering unique challenges and excitement. Here are a few standout pins:
- Creature from the Black Lagoon (Bally, December 1992): This machine combines 1950s drive-in movie nostalgia with a thrilling gameplay experience, complete with a holographic monster and impressive multiball features.
- Godzilla (Premium) (Stern, September 2021): Players battle the King of the Monsters, navigating complex ramps and destructive modes that make this machine a modern classic.
- Medieval Madness (Williams, June 1997): Renowned for its whimsical humor and intricate castle destruction sequences, this pin is a favorite among enthusiasts.
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (CE) (Spooky Pinball, January 2024): A newer addition, this machine terrifies and delights with its horror theme and challenging modes.
- Elton John (CE) (Jersey Jack Pinball, October 2023): Featuring the flamboyant rock star, this machine dazzles with its colorful playfield and electrifying music.
Applauding the Champions
A huge congratulations to the champions of this month’s tournament! Kyle Stahl, who holds an impressive State Rank of 97th, claimed the top spot with their exceptional skill. Keith Waz, ranked 99th in the state, secured second place with a remarkable performance. Bryon Schmitz, a local hero from Madison with a State Rank of 95th and an IFPA rank of 1295, took third place. Mark Liberto, ranked 264th in the state, rounded out the top four with a strong showing.
