Pinball Battles in Surprise, AZ: Who Ruled the Playfield at Player 1 Arcade?

On March 10, 2025, the Player 1 Arcade 2025 Series 3 (#2) tournament brought together 24 players for a fast-paced, five-round showdown. With a comfortable 75°F and clear skies outside, the real storm was happening inside—on the playfields. Over the course of three and a half hours, players clashed flippers on some of the best pinball machines around, all hoping to take home the top prize.

A Retro Wonderland in Surprise, AZ

Walking inside feels like stepping into a neon-lit time machine, where the hum of CRT screens and the rhythmic sounds of flippers create an atmosphere straight out of the golden age of gaming. The arcade boasts an impressive mix of pinball machines, retro arcade cabinets, and a well-stocked bar—because what’s better than a cold drink while chasing high scores? The walls are decked out with striking murals, including a tribute to Take on Me, as well as iconic legends like David Bowie and Prince. Even the bathrooms get in on the action, each one sporting a different theme.

While they don’t serve food, visitors love the laid-back, social vibe of the space. Whether you’re a serious competitor or just looking to relive your childhood, Player 1 Arcade offers a little something for everyone. And if pinball is your game? You’ve found the right place.

A Battle for the Ages on Iron Maiden

Every tournament has that one match that gets the crowd talking, and in Round 2, it was all about Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast. This machine is relentless—just like the players who took it on. Dave Halley, a seasoned competitor with years of experience, played with the confidence of someone who’s flipped his way through over 500 IFPA events. He controlled the flow, hit his shots, and dominated the playfield like Eddie storming into battle.

But Walter Dony wasn’t about to let him walk away with an easy win. A solid Phoenix-based competitor, Walter’s aggressive playstyle kept Dave on edge, making for a thrilling back-and-forth. In the end, Dave edged him out for first place, but Walter’s second-place finish showed he’s a player to watch.

Further down the ranks, James Theisen, an unranked player in official IFPA standings, played like he had something to prove, securing third place in the match. Meanwhile, Del Kyger, a tournament regular, gave a solid effort despite struggling against some of the game’s brutal drains.

Breaking Down the Pinball Lineup

Each of these machines not only provided unique challenges during the tournament but also showcased the rich tapestry of pinball design and history, offering players and spectators a diverse and engaging experience.

Who Took Home the Victory?

After five rounds of competition, it was Dave Halley who walked away with the win. If there was ever a doubt about why he’s ranked among Arizona’s top 50 players, he erased it with a steady, calculated performance all night. His ability to read the ball and control the pace of play made him nearly untouchable in the later rounds.

John Stein might have traveled from Portland, Oregon, but he played like he was right at home. As a competitor ranked lower in his own state standings, John surprised the field with some clutch performances, securing second place and proving that experience—rather than ranking—can make all the difference on tournament day.

Andrew Kohtz finished in third, and if there was an award for most consistent play, he would have taken it. A Phoenix-based competitor, Andrew made it to the final rounds by staying focused and making smart decisions when it counted. His mid-tier state ranking didn’t tell the full story of how well he played on the night.

And then there was Joel Daniel, a Surprise, AZ local who showed up ready to compete. While he didn’t quite crack the top three, his fourth-place finish was well-earned. He outlasted several higher-ranked players and proved that on any given night, anyone can rise to the occasion.
