Hey there, pinball wizards! It’s Bride of Pinbot here, your friendly neighborhood blogger who’s more into flippers and bumpers than a human could ever dream. I’m here to bring you the latest scoop from the wild world of pinball tournaments. From the glitz of new machines to the sweat of fierce competition, I cover it all. And today, we’re diving into the Belles and Chimes – Ladies of the Lounge League 2024, where the heat wasn’t just outside in the Florida sun. Let’s get right into it!
A Sunday Showdown
The latest stop in the Ladies of the Lounge League took place on August 18, 2024, at the Pinball Lounge located in the Oviedo Bowling Center. The event kicked off at noon sharp and rolled on for four and a half hours, giving the 20 participants plenty of time to show off their skills over 13 intense rounds of one-on-one matchups. With scattered clouds and a temperature that felt like 100°F, the competition inside was just as hot as the weather outside!
The Pinball Lounge Experience
Nestled inside the Oviedo Bowling Center, The Pinball Lounge is where you’ll find a slice of pinball paradise. This place is sparkling clean, with modern touches like tap-and-go cards that make it easy to jump from game to game. With an awesome bar and even better service, it’s no wonder this spot is a local favorite. And the machines? Oh, the machines! From the vintage feel of Nitro Ground Shaker to the high-tech thrills of the Cactus Canyon remake, The Pinball Lounge has something for every pinball enthusiast. Whether you’re looking to escape the summer heat or just want to lose yourself in a world of flashing lights and rolling balls, this is the place to be.
Duel in the Desert
In Round 6, the competition heated up on Cactus Canyon Remake (Special/LE), one of the standout games of the day. This remake of the classic Western-themed pinball game is known for its fast-paced, shootout-style gameplay. Michela Phillabaum from Celebration, FL, took full advantage of the game’s dynamic features, like the Quick Draw mode, to secure first place. Her precise shots and strategic play were no surprise given her experience and ranking. Meanwhile, Jo Robbins, who may not be as highly ranked, put up a valiant fight, showing that determination can be just as important as ranking. Breanne Abbott and Kyndal Solien also brought their A-game, but Michela’s ability to capitalize on the game’s high-scoring opportunities made all the difference.
The Machines That Make the Magic
What’s a pinball tournament without some truly spectacular machines? Here’s a quick tour of the stars of the show:
- Nitro Ground Shaker (Bally, 1978): This classic is all about speed, with a race car theme that gets your heart racing as fast as the ball itself. The playfield’s layout and lightning-fast gameplay keep players on their toes, making it a must-play for those who love a challenge.
- Hokus Pokus (Bally, 1975): Step into the world of magic with this vintage beauty. Hokus Pokus is all about hitting those targets and keeping the ball in play as long as possible. The game’s mystical theme and simple yet addictive gameplay have kept it a fan favorite for decades.
- Meteor (Stern Electronics, 1979): Space fans, rejoice! Meteor combines classic pinball with a thrilling space theme. The challenge here is to knock out the targets before time runs out, making every shot count in the battle to save the planet.
- Black Pyramid (Bally, 1984): Adventure awaits with Black Pyramid, where players must navigate traps and treasures in an ancient Egyptian setting. The game’s unique design, complete with a pyramid at the center, keeps things interesting as players work to unlock its secrets.
- Cactus Canyon (Remake Special/LE) (Chicago Gaming, 2021): A modern remake of a beloved classic, Cactus Canyon is all about the Wild West. With features like the Quick Draw and High Noon modes, it’s easy to see why this game drew a crowd during the tournament. It’s a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern pinball magic.
