Pirates of the Caribbean Gameplay & History

Jersey Jack Pinball’s Pirates of the Caribbean, released in 2018 and designed by Eric Meunier, is one of the most ambitious and physically spectacular machines ever built — a sprawling, treasure-hunting epic based on the blockbuster film franchise. Its centerpiece is a genuine showstopper: a variable-speed rocking elevated mini-playfield with a ball cannon attached beneath it, so the cannon pitches up and down as the deck rocks, changing your shot’s trajectory in real time. Add three concentric spinning disks, a whirlpool funnel, twenty-seven standup targets, and five flippers, and you have a table of staggering depth and motion.

The game’s defining feature is its color-coded multiballs — and the fact that all of them can be stacked. You shoot the upper loop for Blue, light the major shots for Red, lock balls at the chest for Green, work the left spinner for Purple, and damage the target ship for Yellow, layering them together for chaos and enormous scoring. Gold is the connective currency: combo the upper loop and hold the upper flipper to direct the ball into the gold targets, and at fifty gold you can start Tortuga Multiball at the lower scoop. Modes begin at the map shot, and the more modes you have available, the more each mode shot is worth.

There’s serious strategy for the dedicated, from always completing the PIRATE lanes on purple for a playfield multiplier, to learning the rocking-cannon timing to land the precise, more-damaging shot into the side of the target ship. With its subway system, hidden cellar holes, and that unforgettable rocking ship, Pirates of the Caribbean is a maximalist marvel — a machine that rewards a player willing to dive deep into its layered, stackable ruleset. Yo ho, a pirate’s life indeed.
