Torpedo Gameplay & History

Torpedo, a vintage electromechanical offering from the Spanish manufacturer Petaco, captures the tense, industrial aesthetic of mid-century naval combat. As a single-player experience defined by classic reel-based scoring, the machine strips away the digital clutter of modern pinball in favor of a tactile, rhythmic challenge. The playfield is tight and aggressive, centered around a signature vari-target that demands precision aim; hitting it with the right velocity is essential to cranking up your score before the ball inevitably drains.

The mechanical layout is surprisingly dense for its era, utilizing a pair of flippers to navigate a gauntlet of two standup targets and a high-energy spinning target. Strategic play hinges on managing the kick-out hole, which serves as both a reward and a potential trap, forcing players to balance risk and reward with every shot. The inclusion of an upper-right rollunder provides a unique return path, keeping the ball moving through the playfield’s geometry and preventing the stagnant play often found in lesser EM designs. While it lacks the spectacle of modern toys, Torpedo excels as a pure test of ball control and timing, offering a high-stakes tactical experience that feels as punchy as its namesake.
