Punk! Gameplay & History

Gottlieb’s Punk!, released in 1982 and designed by Tom Szafransky, is a defiantly of-its-moment machine that channels the raw energy of the punk-rock movement onto a busy solid-state playfield. With four flippers, five pop bumpers, five kick targets, and four banks of drop targets, it’s a target-rich, fast-playing table whose rebellious theme set it apart from the fantasy and sci-fi games crowding the era.

The standout feature is its multiball, which carries a genuine challenge: to start it, you must lock all the balls while playing the same single ball, since the locked balls are ejected the moment you drain. That demands focus and consistency, rewarding a player who can keep a ball alive while methodically banking locks. There’s a clever, player-friendly wrinkle too — if you drain via the outlane on the same side where you have a ball locked, it frees that ball and your turn continues, a small mercy that can save a game.

Energetic, distinctive, and packed with targets, Punk! is an underrated and unusual entry from Gottlieb’s System 80 era — a machine whose anarchic theme and demanding multiball give it real character. For collectors who appreciate an offbeat license and a fast, busy playfield with a genuine test of skill at its heart, it’s a fun and rebellious classic that plays as loud and brash as the music it celebrates. Turn it up and lock ’em all.
