Spooky Pinball’s Rob Zombie’s Spookshow International, released in 2016 and designed by Charlie Emery with Ben Heckendorn and Dennis Nordman, was the breakout title that put the boutique Wisconsin manufacturer on the map. A gleefully macabre tribute to the musician and horror filmmaker, it pairs Rob Zombie’s grindhouse aesthetic with an ambitious, multiball-hungry layout — three flippers, an elevated mini-playfield, a drop target feeding an inner-orbit ball lock, and a distinctive “Chroma Corpse” color display.
The game is built around multiballs and serial-killer lore. Nearly everything can lead to a multiball: the modes, two standup targets, and the drop-target lock all start one if shot enough times, building toward a chaotic seven-ball climax. The deep play centers on the Murder Ride — hit the standup target repeatedly to spell out serial-killer names, then claim the reward at the inner loop. Once you’ve claimed all the Murder Ride killers, repeatedly hitting the inner loop pays an enormous jackpot of roughly two million per hit for a frantic twenty seconds.
There’s clever, player-friendly strategy baked in, too — with the CHOP lanes set to ball save (the factory default), the savvy move is to leave the final letter on an outlane so you can earn the ball back when you need it most. Dark, loud, and bursting with horror-host personality, Spookshow International is a landmark machine for the boutique movement — proof that a small, passionate maker could deliver depth and spectacle to rival the big names. For fans of Rob Zombie and adventurous collectors alike, it’s a wickedly entertaining ride.
