Surfer Gameplay & History

Gottlieb’s Surfer, released in 1976, catches a wave of sun-soaked fun with a water-sports theme and the clean, rewarding design that defined the company’s electromechanical heyday. Built around a five-bank of drop targets, a spinning target, and a set of star rollovers, it’s a breezy, accessible table that nonetheless hides a satisfying scoring ladder for the player willing to ride it out.

The game has a clear, well-mapped path to a big score. It starts at the plunge — if the left orbit skill shot is lit, you shoot it repeatedly until your bonus reaches the 10,000-to-15,000 range, where the bonus maxes out. From there, the play shifts to completing the star rollovers, which light the kick-out hole for 5,000 points and 2X bonus (or 3X on the fifth ball) on the side lanes. Finally, the drop targets build still more bonus while lighting the special and extra ball, and completing all the drops and stars together awards 5,000 points and resets the targets for another run.

Bright, beachy, and pleasingly strategic, Surfer is a fine example of mid-70s Gottlieb design rewarding a player who learns its rhythm. For collectors who love a sunny theme and a clean, well-balanced drop-target game, it’s an enjoyable and endearing classic.
