Joust Gameplay & History

Williams’ “Joust” is a highly unusual solid-state machine designed by Barry Oursler, famous for its head-to-head competitive play format. With a limited production of 402 units, this two-player, dual-sided table flips traditional pinball mechanics sideways—literally.

Two players face off on opposite ends of a shared playfield, battling simultaneously to score points and drain balls on their opponent’s side. The layout requires four flippers to manage the chaotic crossfire. Offensive strategy revolves around two spinning targets and four sets of three-bank drop targets.

Defensively, two sets of 2-in-line drop targets and two kick-out holes provide critical utility and scoring. The constant back-and-forth volley makes “Joust” a frantic, high-speed duel that relies heavily on reflex saves, strategic passing, and anticipating your opponent’s next move. It remains one of the most distinctive and highly sought-after competitive arcade experiences ever produced.
