Rollergames Gameplay & History

Williams’ Rollergames, released in 1990 and designed by Steve Ritchie, brings the high-banked chaos of the early-90s roller-derby TV show to a fast, aggressive playfield. The Master of Flow gives it real speed and a couple of clever mechanical touches: a ball-catching magnet near the upper flipper and a two-stage kickback in the left outlane that rockets a draining ball up a hidden ramp and all the way around the orbit to the upper-right flipper.

The scoring rewards combos and smart lock management. Shooting the left loop and ramp in combo builds an increasing value up to 500K — saved throughout the game — while also racking up unseen Power Play points. Locks are lit by hitting three drops up the middle, and the savvy move is to light all three of your locks before banking any, since they can be stolen by opponents in competitive play. The skate targets light the magnet, a useful tool for control.

There’s tense strategy in the Sudden Death mode and multiball, where the advice is to keep hammering the Pit and the Wall, and where locking a ball during Sudden Death immediately feeds the plunger for a quick, timer-building million. Fast, physical, and full of Ritchie’s signature flow, Rollergames is an energetic slice of early-90s pinball — a derby-themed brawler that rewards a player who can keep up with its relentless pace.
