WWF Royal Rumble Gameplay & History

Data East’s WWF Royal Rumble, released in 1994 and designed by Tim Seckel and Joe Kaminkow, body-slams the world of professional wrestling onto a busy, action-packed playfield. With four flippers, an elevated mini-playfield, a captive ball, a horseshoe lane, and a shaker motor that rumbles when you hit targets, it captures the bombast and spectacle of the WWF’s golden age — complete with a roster of larger-than-life grapplers.

The scoring revolves around collecting wrestlers and chasing the big multiball. Gathering all nine wrestlers lights the Royal Rumble multiball on ball one for a fat ten-million bonus, started at the left ramp or right orbit. A key strategic call comes at ball launch: always select “Pandemonium” when it’s offered, since it turns that mode into a three-ball multiball instead of single-ball play. There’s a fun interactive feature too — when you hear the “Make the Tag” callout, you press the TAG launch button three times for five million, with the Tag standups activating it.

The deep play rewards persistence and competitive awareness: completing both sets of TAG standups and hitting the captive ball pays ten million, and the “Get in the Ring” and “R.I.P.” jackpots accumulate across games, so you’ll want to collect them before an opponent does. Loud, frantic, and dripping with mid-90s wrestling theatrics, WWF Royal Rumble is an energetic and entertaining Data East machine. For wrestling fans and players who love a busy, multiball-driven table, it’s a body-slamming good time. Are you ready to rumble?
