A Night to Remember

Speakeasy at Sparks, held on June 14, 2024, was an electrifying event with 23 eager players battling it out over 14 intense head-to-head games. With a start time of 7:30 PM and a total duration of three and a half hours, this pinball tournament was packed with excitement from start to finish. The top 8 competitors advanced to the finals, where the competition was fiercer than ever.

Sparks Pinball Museum | Arcade & Bar: The Perfect Venue

Located at 33151 23 Mile Rd, Chesterfield, MI, the Sparks Pinball Museum | Arcade & Bar provided a stellar backdrop for the tournament. Known for its extensive collection of pinball machines, most of which cost just a dollar per play, the venue also features other arcade games. Contrary to my initial fears of a grimy arcade, Sparks turned out to be a clean and welcoming spot, perfect for pinball enthusiasts. Check out their website for more info: Sparks Pinball.

From Flippers to Frustration: A Tale at the Speakeasy Showdown

Ah, the Speakeasy at Sperry’s – a pinball saga set in the heart of Port Huron, Michigan, within the cozy confines of Sperry’s Moviehouse. Before I dive into the heart of the matter, let me tell you, dear readers, how I yearn to swap my pen for pinball paddles, to feel the buzz and whirl of the arcade instead of the monotonous tap-tap-tapping on my keyboard. But alas, here I am, recounting tales of pinball glory while my own flippers lay idle.

A Duel of Titans in a Digital Saloon

The night was March 21, overcast with a biting chill in the air, yet inside Sperry’s, the atmosphere was anything but cold. Eight valiant players battled across 10 electronic steeds, their LED hearts beating in sync with the thumping of flippers. The highlight? A face-off not to be missed between Stephen Mowbray, the dark horse from Lapeer, and Joe Wade, a seasoned veteran of the pinball scene. Their rivalry? The stuff of legends, or at least, it should be.

Ode to the Mechanical Mavericks

In a field where metal balls dance to the tune of fate, two pinball machines stole the show – Cactus Canyon, with its wild western whirls, and Halloween, a spooky marathon runner that tested even the most steadfast players with its 20-minute-long slogs. But let’s not forget the other marvels: Scooby-Doo with its mysteries unfolding beneath the glass, Deadpool‘s cheeky charm, the sinuous danger of Venom, the retro cool of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the sleek espionage of James Bond 007.

The Unlikely Heroes

In a twist that would make any screenwriter blush, Stephen Mowbray clinched the title, his name now etched in the annals of pinball history alongside Joe Wade and Joe Pastula. Each, with their own tale of triumph and tragedy, became the champions of the night, their rankings in the grand tapestry of IFPA a testament to their skill, or perhaps, their sheer persistence.

A Night at the Movies (And Pinball)

Sperry’s Moviehouse – not just a venue, but a sanctuary for those who cherish the flicker of the silver screen and the allure of the arcade. With its delectable cuisine, wallet-friendly prices, and seats that embrace you like a long-lost friend, it was the perfect backdrop for our pinball drama. And let’s not forget the real hero of the night, Joe Wade, not just a contender, but the orchestrator of this grand event.

So, as I sign off from another report from the pinball frontier, I extend my heartiest thanks to Joe Wade and the warm embrace of Sperry’s Moviehouse. May the flippers never tire, the balls never falter, and may I, one day, join the ranks of those I write about with such envy. Stay tuned, for the world of pinball spins on, and who knows, perhaps the next champion could be any one of us – even a weary writer with dreams of arcade glory.

IFPA Speakeasy at Starlite Pinball Showdown: A Night of Flips and Fun

An Evening at Starlite Arcade

On a brisk evening last February, pinball enthusiasts flocked to the Starlite Arcade, ready for what was advertised as an 18-hour pinball marathon. Now, before you start thinking we were all trapped in a time warp or had our hands superglued to the flippers, let me assure you, it wasn’t quite the pinball equivalent of running a double marathon. Though, it’s also possible it’s just a bug in the software!

The Grueling Battle Format

In this high-stakes competition, 24 players were pitted against each other in 11 grueling rounds. The tournament followed a Fair Strikes format, where participants were eliminated after receiving 6 strikes, with the distribution of strikes in four-player groups being 1 strike for 2nd and 3rd place while 4th gets 2 strikes, and 1 strike for 2nd and 2 for 3rd in three-player groups. This format ensured that each round was filled with nail-biting moments and strategic gameplay.

The Marathon Game on Led Zeppelin

Did you hear about the pinball tournament that was supposed to take a couple hours but ended up feeling like a Led Zeppelin album that went on for days? Turns out, one game on the Led Zeppelin pinball machine lasted 795 minutes! I guess when they said “Stairway to Heaven,” they didn’t mention it was the extended version. Must be a bug in the blog software, because no one’s fingers should survive that marathon! . In this prolonged battle of endurance and skill, Brandon Blake emerged victorious, showcasing his exceptional talent and earning a well-deserved first place in this round, followed by Michael Courtney who also displayed immense skill and determination.

Celebrating the Victors

The tournament concluded with a few players standing out with their extraordinary pinball prowess. The top four champions who dominated the evening were:

  1. Brandon Blake, with an IFPA rank of 2243, demonstrated unmatched skill throughout the tournament, marking his 37th IFPA event with a spectacular win.
  2. Michael Courtney, known for his strategic gameplay and ranked 2648 by IFPA, impressively clinched the second spot in his 146th IFPA event.
  3. Chris Grace, coming in third with an IFPA rank of 905, showed his seasoned expertise in his 99th IFPA event.
  4. Andrew Dunaj, the underdog from Michigan with an IFPA rank of 12007, surprised many by securing the fourth position in just his 16th IFPA event.

Pinball Machines That Stole the Show

The tournament featured an array of 10 pinball machines, each adding its unique flavor to the competition. Notably, “Led Zeppelin (Premium/LE)” by Stern and “Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast (Premium)” by Stern, released on April 01, 2018, were among the favorites, offering players a blend of rock ‘n’ roll and intricate gameplay. Classics like “Thunderbolt” by Allied Leisure, released in 1977, and “Judge Dredd” by Bally from 1993, added a nostalgic touch. The recently released “JAWS (Pro)” by Stern, on January 04, 2024, brought a fresh challenge and something that players can really sink their teeth into.

The Enchanting Venue
