Qualifiers Take Center Stage at District 82’s Flippin’ Friday Tournament

The pinball scene came alive once again at District 82 Pinball for the D82 Flippin’ Friday Qualifying Tournament on September 6, 2024. Players gathered in De Pere, Wisconsin, to battle through four intense rounds, each featuring two games. With 12 competitors vying for a spot in the finals, the atmosphere buzzed with friendly rivalry and a clear sky overhead. In just over two hours, the field began to narrow as skillful flips and precise shots determined the top players who’ll return for the finals in the next article.

So, who qualified, and what made this event one to remember? Let’s break it down.

District 82: A Pinball Haven in De Pere

District 82 Pinball Arcade, nestled at 800 O Keefe Road in De Pere, is more than just a location—it’s a destination for anyone serious about pinball. With over 100 machines, the place is packed with meticulously maintained games from every era. Open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays, it offers unlimited play for a set fee, making it perfect for group outings or casual visits.

While this arcade is a paradise for solo players, it’s also well-suited for family-friendly fun or private events. You’ll find everything from vintage machines to the latest releases, all kept in pristine condition. Soda and water are available, but if you’re looking to add a little extra kick, you’re welcome to bring your own drinks. District 82 is the place to play—whether you’re practicing for a tournament or just flipping for fun.

A Tight Finish on Skateball in Round 4

Round 4 brought us one of the standout moments of the evening, a head-to-head on Bally’s Skateball from 1980. Known for its fast-paced, multi-ball modes, Skateball doesn’t hold back, and neither did the players. Peter Goeben (state rank 46th) stepped up with the precision of a seasoned player, using the “Ball Save” feature like a pro to stay in the game. With their smooth control, Peter snatched the top spot, showing why their IFPA rank of 732 is not to be underestimated.

Tara Henjum (state rank 86th) gave Peter a run for their money, expertly navigating the challenging lanes and nearly stealing first place. But with Danny Bronny (state rank 8th) and Jordan Cappaert (state rank 58th) hot on her heels, the game was nothing short of thrilling. While Tara and Danny’s scores remained close, it was Peter’s skillful maneuvers that sealed their victory.

Pinball Machines: The Stars of the Show

With 110 machines to choose from, the D82 tournament offered no shortage of variety. Here’s a look at some of the machines that had players lining up for their chance to shine:

• Supersonic (Bally, 1979): This machine is all about speed. With a jet-themed backglass and fast gameplay, Supersonic puts players in the cockpit of a high-speed race to rack up points. The bonus multipliers in the upper lanes make it a game where skill meets strategy.
• Star Trek (Stern, 2013): If you’re a fan of Star Trek, this game takes you right into the heart of the action. From warp-speed ramps to a visually stunning playfield, this machine captures the essence of the iconic series. The deep rule set keeps players engaged, challenging them to complete missions from different episodes.
• Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast (Stern, 2018): Heavy metal meets pinball in this modern classic. Its no-frills design highlights the best of classic pinball, making it a popular choice among tournament players.

Rising to the Top: Tournament Qualifying Winners

The final qualifying game on Sky Kings was a battle to the finish, but in the end, Peter Goeben came out on top, continuing their impressive performance from earlier rounds. With 339 total IFPA events under their belt, Peter showed why they’re a serious competitor, outlasting the field to claim first place in qualifying.

Not far behind was Danny Bronny, who, with a state rank of 8th and 172 total IFPA events, showcased remarkable consistency. Their smooth play and tournament experience make them a strong contender in the finals.

Erik Thoren, who organized this event, managed to secure third place. Ranked 5th in the state, Erik’s knowledge of the machines undoubtedly gave him an edge, but it was his skills that earned him a place on the podium.

In fourth, Tara Henjum held her own, defying her state rank of 86th to qualify for the finals. With 323 total IFPA events, Tara’s tenacity and flair for competition were evident throughout the night.
