Indianapolis 500 Gameplay & History

Bally’s Indianapolis 500, released in 1995 and designed by Dennis Nordman, puts you behind the wheel of the most famous race in American motorsport. A three-flipper machine with a strong sense of speed and a digital racing game played out on the DMD, it captures the roar of the Brickyard through a layout built around turbo boosts, qualifying, and climbing from the back of the pack to the checkered flag.

The scoring rewards a player who learns the track. The Turbo lock is central to multiball — with just two balls left in regular multiball, sending both into the turbo awards an add-a-ball, and three in the turbo pays a super jackpot. Comboing the left loop into the Turbo lock scores a “Loop-Turbo Combo” that can rack up big points when collected repeatedly. There’s smart wisdom in the modes, too: be sure to play out Gasoline Alley, since one of its awards lets you pass fifteen cars at once, and during modes like Go For The Pole, repeatedly pressing the launch button spots you a shot.

The table teaches caution as well as aggression — never shoot the Lite-Up standups on purpose, since they often lead to unfair drains, and avoid the lit center hole during multiball. Collecting souvenirs reduces how many times you must hit a standup to complete it. Fast, thematic, and rewarding to learn, Indianapolis 500 is a fine Nordman racer that captures the white-knuckle thrill of the Indy 500 — gentlemen, start your engines.
