Pinball Manufacturers: Playmatic
A little history on Playmatic
Founded in 1967 in Santa Coloma de Gramanet near Barcelona, Playmatic quickly established itself as one of Spain’s premier pinball manufacturers. While American giants like Bally and Williams dominated stateside arcades, Playmatic carved out a massive footprint across European and Latin American markets. Over their 20-year run, they produced roughly 60 to 70 distinct models, blending heavy American design influence with vibrant, distinctly Spanish artwork.
Playmatic machines were engineered physically differently than their American counterparts. To combat heavy location wear, Playmatic laid their playfield artwork on a durable plastic sheet over the flat wooden surface, resulting in incredibly resilient playfields that have stood the test of time.
Despite their innovative ideas and vibrant artwork, Playmatic faced mounting pressure in the 1980s. Squeezed by fierce competition from larger American pinball manufacturers and the explosive global growth of video arcades, the company officially ceased production in 1987. Although they are a rare sight in modern IFPA tournament banks, Playmatic machines remain highly sought-after collector pieces, serving as a vital and enduring chapter of European arcade history.
