Seattle’s Pinball Showdown: An Epic Journey through Time and Skill

Overcast skies at a comfortable 67°F painted the perfect backdrop on September 3, 2023, for an intense pinball showdown at The Ice Box. Located at the heart of Seattle, this venue reverberated with enthusiasm and competitive fervor, thanks to the Ice Box Mixed Matchplay tournament organized by the spirited Germain Mariolle.

An Epic Battle with the Stars (Star Gazer, to be precise!)

The true magic of pinball is when a game transcends time. This was brilliantly evident during the longest match of the tournament on “Star Gazer” by Stern, a machine that has enthralled players since 1980. The game spanned an astonishing 97 minutes! Phillip Saltzman secured the top spot with Dave Stewart, Richie Terry, and Lonnie Langford right on his heels. Such tenacity, especially on a vintage machine, is a testament to the players’ dedication and skill.

Celebrating the Titans of Pinball

When the flippers finally rested, Lonnie Langford emerged as the undisputed champion. Following him were Ashley Weaver, Jarrett Gaddy, and Trevor McDonald, who showcased exemplary gameplay. A special mention goes out to Emily Reilhan, who traveled all the way from Canada to make her mark on the top 10, embodying the international spirit of pinball.

A Blast from the Past: The Machines

The Ice Box was an eclectic mix of vintage classics and modern marvels. Machines like “Centaur” and “Dolly Parton” transported players back to the 80s, while “Jurassic Park (Pro)” offered a more recent thrill. The impeccable condition of these machines and their rotation ensured players experienced the best of both worlds.

The Icy Charm of The Ice Box

The Ice Box isn’t just another arcade. It’s a piece of Seattle’s rich history, offering a delightful fusion of the past and present. From its unique ice locker architecture to the ever-evolving game selection (hello, Killer Queen machines!), it’s a haven for pinball enthusiasts. And who could resist a BBQ offering delicious treats for patrons?

The bar’s eclectic selection of beverages, paired with an array of local arts and crafts, adds to its charm. The Ice Box isn’t just about games; it’s about community. Regular tournaments, coupled with live music, make it a hub of entertainment.

Nestled inconspicuously on East La Palma Avenue, this venue was the battleground for the Pins & Pirates Season 1 – #7 pinball tournament, an event that showcased both rising talents and the undying charm of the silver ball.

An Unexpected Turn on Halloween

During the solitary round of the tournament, players and spectators alike were treated to a thrilling game on the “Halloween (Blood Sucker Edition)” machine. Scott Macias, ranked a respectable 78 in the IFPA, led the charge, but the real surprise was the runner-up, Brandon Bityk, who defied his rank of 7580 to clinch second place. The machine, one of the latest additions to the arcade, seemed to resonate with the spooky spirit of the event.

The Victorious and The Valiant

A Journey Through Time

Captain’s Arcade wasn’t just a venue; it was a time capsule. From the vintage charm of Meteor by Stern (1979) to the contemporary allure of James Bond 007 (LE) by Stern (2022), the arcade showcased a stunning collection of 59 pinball machines. Luke Daniels and Chelsea Robinette, both unranked, showcased impressive skills, proving that in the world of pinball, surprises are the norm.

Organized by Rachel Bess and hosted at the iconic Electric Bat Arcade, the tournament had everything you could hope for—intense competition, surprising upsets, and machines that could make even a pinball wizard’s head spin.

A Spotlight on Strategy and Skill

Amongst the five rounds of gameplay, a standout moment occurred during Round 4 on the “Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast” by Stern, a machine that has been around since April 1, 2018. The clash featured an impressive array of competitors: Conrad Betti, Adam Horton, Brandon Passey, and Jason Hecht. Conrad Betti from Phoenix, IFPA rank 339, skillfully navigated his way to 1st place. What separated him from the pack? It turns out, Conrad’s strategy was a masterclass in patience and timing, as he adeptly waited for the ideal moments to utilize the game’s ramps and multi-ball opportunities. Adam Horton, IFPA rank 247, followed closely in second, making it a game of almost equals.

Champions of the Night

As the flippers ceased their frenzied flipping and the final ball plunged into the abyss, the overall winners emerged. Taking the top spot was Dave Halley with an IFPA ranking of 749, a veteran with a staggering 351 IFPA events under his belt. Following him were Jon Soares from Phoenix, John Shopple from Mesa, and Keegan Crandall, who managed to nab 4th place despite participating in just six IFPA events so far. Multiball Madness: A Night of Pinball Perfection at Hop Central Brewery

🌡️ When the Heat Goes Up, the Balls Drop

It was an inferno outside at 109°F, but the real heat was happening inside Hop Central Brewery on the evening of August 28, 2023. Mark Farina Jr., known to friends as the “Pinball Wizard,” organized this ball-dropping spectacle. The Multiball Monday Tournament consisted of 5 rounds with 12 players, all seemingly unphased by the scorching Arizona temperature.

🦖 Godzilla Strikes in Round 2: The Underdogs Rise

Amidst five intense rounds, one game on a Stern’s Godzilla (Pro) machine stole the show during Round 2. Emily Vanidestine made a valiant effort, but ultimately Greg Mohs from Arizona was the one who roared to victory. Greg was followed by Shianne Brown, an IFPA rank-zero enigma who almost pulled a Mothra-sized upset. Despite her best attempts, Emily landed in third place, while Jason Hecht secured fourth.

🏆 Tournament Titans: Experience vs. Passion

When the flippers stopped flipping and the scoreboard froze, it was Mark Farina Jr. who emerged victorious. Notably, he is also the organizer of this arcade fiesta, making him somewhat of a pinball polymath. Close behind were John Finnegan, Greg Mohs, and Alex Kee, who proved their mettle on machines that ranged from Stern’s James Bond 007 to American Pinball’s Hot Wheels.

Speaking of Alex Kee—participating in only eight IFPA events and yet claiming 4th place? That’s like bringing a spork to a gunfight and coming out unscathed.

🎮 Machine Melee: The Stars of the Show

The tournament was played on an array of machines so varied, it could make even James Bond exchange his Martini for pinball quarters. Speaking of which, Stern’s “James Bond 007” was an espionage-filled extravaganza. “Oktoberfest” and “Hot Wheels” by American Pinball offered something for both beer enthusiasts and car fanatics, while “Foo Fighters” and “Rush” by Stern rocked the room.

🍺 Hop Central Brewery: The ‘Pin’-ultimate Venue

If you’re in Arizona and you haven’t checked out Hop Central Brewery, you’re missing out. Friendly staff, an amazing selection of IPAs and Belgian beers, and of course, pinball machines that can make you forget the scorching Arizona sun.

Pinball, Bourbon, and the Surprise Upset at Superelectric

As summer started winding down on a beautifully clear day with temperatures at 71°F, Cleveland’s Superelectric Pinball Parlour at 6500 Detroit Ave was just heating up. On August 27th, 2023, 20 pinball wizards, both seasoned and fresh-faced, descended upon the venue for the Superelectric Pinball Battle.

Atmosphere on the Tilt

Cleveland’s best-kept secret, Superelectric Pinball Parlor, isn’t just any pinball joint. With its tantalizing concoctions like the apricot-infused bourbon called Bull Durham and the economical $6 all-you-can-play pinball, the venue is an absolute treasure. With both modern and vintage pinball machines, it’s a joyride through time.

A Game of Legacy and Legacies

One of the many highlights was the thrilling face-off on Stern’s Iron Maiden: Legacy of the Beast during the Semifinals. Aaron Rich (IFPA rank 80) claimed the top spot, closely followed by Terrence Carl, Kyle Shepard, and Bill Taylor. It’s worth noting that the game itself, released in April 2018, is inspired by the band’s legacy, much like the players are creating their own with every flip and score.

Pinball Wizards and their Machines

And speaking of machines, let’s chat about a personal favorite of mine: Bride of Pinbot by Williams. Oh, did I mention? I’m the Bride of Pinbot! Okay, not really, but let’s just say if I had a pinball alter ego, she’d be it!

Other crowd-pullers included the Game Of Thrones (Pro), a nod to the television behemoth, and Jurassic Park (Pro), where players dodged virtual velociraptors and T-Rexes with every ball. The newly released Foo Fighters (Pro) by Stern from 2023 also drew a considerable crowd, especially with its rock anthem infused gameplay.

Who Tilted To The Top?

John Delzoppo, the man behind this fantastic event, proved that organizers can be champions too by claiming the first spot. Following him was the impressive Bill Taylor, JD Chips, and Aaron Rich. A special mention goes out to JD Chips, a relatively new player with just 25 IFPA events under his belt, yet managing to secure the third spot. The top 8 showcased a delightful mix of experienced veterans and passionate newcomers.

Tacos, Taps, and Tilt: Unfolding the Pinsomniacs Pinball Tournament at Tepey’s

When Tacos Met Tilt

August 27, 2023, was not your usual scorcher in Jacksonville, Florida. With the thermometer showing 91°F and scattered clouds offering minimal respite, the pinball action was just heating up inside Tepey’s Taps & Tacos. Organized by the illustrious Nick Byrd, this tournament boasted 23 players but, paradoxically, zero rounds. Zero rounds, you say? Yes, we’re as perplexed as you are, but let’s roll with it—much like the pinballs themselves.

Attack from Mars: The Showdown of Aliens and Egos

In a tournament that defied the very concept of ’rounds,’ one game still managed to break free from the mold and claim the spotlight. The game took place on the ‘Attack from Mars‘ machine, an old gem by Bally that’s been abducting quarters since 1995.

Jokton Strealy, hailing from Valdosta, GA, claimed victory. Hot on his heels was Shannon Stafford, who despite a lower placing in this game, showed why they’re a force to reckon with. Andra Booth and Sally Miller, the underdogs, made sure it wasn’t an easy win for anyone.

The Unexpected and The Expected: Overall Winners

It turns out, Shannon Stafford got the last laugh as they ended up winning the tournament overall. Their IFPA rank of 73 wasn’t just for show. Following them was Jokton Strealy and Dan Cone. Special mention goes to Imre Szollosi, whose IFPA rank is a mysterious 0. That’s right, Imre is basically the Banksy of pinball, participating incognito but still snagging 4th place. What’s your secret, Imre?

Machine Mania: Choose Your Battles

The tournament featured a unique selection of 9 pinball machines. For fans of Eleven and her crew, the ‘Stranger Things‘ machine was a hit. For those nostalgic for ’90s B-movies, ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon‘ was the go-to. Stern’s latest release, ‘Foo Fighters,’ also joined the ranks, perfectly blending rock n’ roll with flipper skills.

Tepey’s Taps & Tacos: The Place to Be

As for the venue, if you’re looking for a place that serves delicious tacos and fun in equal measure, look no further. Whether you’re coming for happy hour specials or the games, Tepey’s Taps & Tacos is a jackpot! Check out their website and the plethora of good times they offer.
